The best way to contact me is via email; I check it several times a day. You may ask questions about the lab or lecture over email. For more in-depth questions or concerns, please make an appointment (even during office hours) so that I can give you my full attention.

Course Description: Developmental Biology is a four-credit course, split into three lectures and one lab period per week. Developmental biology is “a study of gametogenesis, fertilization, organogenesis, and the formation of the body. Both organismal and molecular aspects of these processes will be discussed. Laboratory will include observation of and experimentation with invertebrate and vertebrate systems.” Background in cell biology and genetics is useful but not requisite for the course.

Lecture Textbook: Analysis of Biological Development, 2nd edition, by Klaus Kalthoff Supplemental readings from journals will also be included as needed.

Attendance: Regular class attendance is expected. If you miss a class, it is up to you to get the notes from a classmate. If you know ahead of time that you will be missing class (e.g. attendance at a college function, doctor appointment, funeral), let me know as soon as possible. Documentation may be requested.

Grading: Points will be earned from a variety of assignments, including quizzes, exams, writing assignments, and presentations. Assignments and dates are subject to change (adjustments in total number of assignments or points may be possible). Grading will be relative to the class average.

Points Available:

Exams 100 pts (x3)
Final Exam 150 pts
Article reports 10 pts (x8)
Research project 100 pts
Research presentation 50 pts
Total 680 pts

"extra credit" assignments will not be available to individuals.

Academic dishonesty, either in the form of cheating or plagiarism, will not be tolerated, but will be handled according to the Honor Code system as described in the Luther Student Guide.

If you have a concern about a grade given on an assignment, you must:

  1. Make an appointment to talk to me about it.
  2. Have your concrete reasons in writing.
